Self-hypnosis can be a complex and intimidating field, even though the basics are relatively simple. That&#8221;s because it builds grand edifices on top of those simple basics? and because it&#8221;s capable of accomplishing so much in your life with just a trance and a few suggestions.</p>
<p>To learn the basics of self-hypnosis, it helps to note the differences from a guided hypnosis session. In the latter, you&#8221;ll submit yourself to a hypnotist or hypnotherapist for a session lasting about an hour. A self-hypnosis session is usually shorter, from five to ten minutes, and much less involved. It&#8221;s a lot like the difference between going to the doctor and doing a daily workout routine. Self-hypnosis helps you get the basics of life down.</p>
<p>So what are the basics? The first basic is: Keep It Simple. When performing self-hypnosis, you will have difficulty doing a complex regression into your far-off past and mucking things around. Those kinds of sessions are best left to a professional. Instead, focus on just one thing you want to work on. Like creating a positive new habit. Or reframing how you feel towards your boss. Of course, you can build dozens of new habits over time. Do them in dozens of short, efficient self-hypnosis sessions.</p>
<p>The second basic, the one you&#8221;re most interested in, is what&#8221;s often called the &#8220;Ten to One Method.&#8221; This is how you actually hypnotize yourself. In it, you start in a safe place, like your bedroom with the door closed, lying down or sitting in a comfortable chair. And you relax&#8211; close your eyes and relax. Then, you will count down from ten to one. Slowly. After each number, say to yourself, &#8220;deeply relaxed&#8221; as you feel a wave of relaxation flow throughout your body. At one, you will have entered a state of focused, relaxed attention.</p>
<p>This IS the state called hypnosis.</p>
<p>While in hypnosis, you can get to the third basic: deliver positive suggestions to yourself. Make them short, simple, and active. You&#8221;re speaking to your subconscious mind at this point, and it likes to deal with emotion instead of logic. So use exciting, active language. You will have written these suggestions out beforehand, and reviewed them before your session. As soon as you&#8221;re done, enjoy your hypnotic trance for just a touch loner. Then, on the slow count of 3, snap your fingers and come back to the waking world.</p>
<p>Now, be aware that these are just the basics of hypnosis.
